Today’s Solutions: April 28, 2024

This year’s Superbowl offers more to be excited about than good commercials and endless snacks. In a big step for equality in athletics, the Superbowl will include 49ers coach Katie Sowers, the first female and openly gay coach to take the field in a Superbowl game.

Sowers joined the 49ers in 2017 as the National Football League’s (NFL) second female coach and has advocated for increased gender and sexuality equality and support in the league. Before her career with the 49ers, she was a member of the 2013 U.S. Women’s National Football team, worked with the Atlanta Falcons, and served as the athletic director of the City of Kansas City.

Sowers will help coach the 49ers in Miami on Sunday in a much-anticipated game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Earlier this week, we shared the good news about Major League Baseball’s first full-time female coach, Alyssa Nakken. We hope other major league teams across all sports will follow the Bay Area’s lead and hire more female coaches in the near future.
