Today’s Solutions: June 17, 2026

This week we are celebrating the Power of Positivity. No movie emphasizes the importance of positivity quite like Forrest Gump, so much so that scientists are even using his character to map out our brain emotions.

Researchers produced a map of affective emotions called “emotionotopy” after asking volunteers to watch Forrest Gump and express their emotional responses. The researchers then compared the written responses with MRI scans of the brain taken during viewing.

The result? Researchers were able to find a specific, 3-centimeter area of the brain where polarity, complexity, and intensity of emotional experiences occur.

Analyzing emotion through a scientific lens is critical for better understanding and treating mental health. Our brain is a complex organ, but connecting certain regions with specific emotional functions can help us better dissect how we process and feel intense feelings. And we have Forrest Gump to thank for helping us unearth this health solution!
