Spring is drawing closer, meaning it’s almost time for the great bloom of flowers. Speaking of which, there’s one flower that doesn’t get much love: the dandelion. Being such a common flower that grows on peoples’ lawns, people tend to just mow over them. But according to the new president of the British Ecological Society, you’re only hurting wild bee populations when you do this.

Apparently, each dandelion head contains up to 100 individual flowers, known as florets, which contain nectar and pollen. At a time where bee populations are struggling, common flowers, such as dandelions, serve as the perfect source of food for our precious pollinators. So, the next time you mow your lawn, steer clear of the dandelions. Or better yet, replace your lawn with a wild garden and give bees a real boost.
