Blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, like to gather off the coast of San Francisco to feed on krill in the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. Right now, they are showing up in potentially record-breaking numbers.

Just 30 miles offshore from San Francisco, 47 endangered blue whales have been spotted. And scientists think this is a conservative estimate as they cannot see the entire feeding group at once. These gentle giants can eat up to 6-tons of tiny krill per day.

Despite their huge size, blue whales can be difficult to spot, so finding almost 50 in one area is a special occurrence and good news for conservationists and whale-watching fanatics alike.
