Since 1846, the iconic Maid of the Mist ferries have been bringing visitors up close and personal with the breathtaking waterfalls at Niagara Falls. Now visitors are able to enjoy the awe-inspiring trip in a more environment-friendly manner, thanks to the recent launch of two new all-electric, zero-emission touring vessels.

The newly electrified Maid of the Mist experience, not only offers a zero-emissions mode of transport but also allows passengers to take in the wondrous attraction free of the engine noise and exhaust fumes that typically accompany the traditional, diesel-powered vessels.

The pair of zero-emission boats were introduced on October 6th as part of a $70 million revitalization of Niagara Falls State Park and represents the first passenger vessels of their kind in the United States. They are also helping advance Governor Cuomo’s Green New Deal that aims to transition New York to 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2040.

To highlight the sustainability of the new Maid of the Mist, the catamaran-like boats feature a blue-and-green color pattern on the exterior as well as thematic waves to represents the waterfalls. On their lateral sides, the boats feature a lightning bolt symbolic of electricity and a turbine in a nod to hydroelectric power.

“Having this natural wonder in our backyard means we have a special responsibility as its steward and protecting it for future generations,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “This new fleet of all-electric vessels will protect the health of our waterways and environment, and is another example of New York State building back better, smarter, and greener.”
