Emotet has been described as the most dangerous malware in the world, but thanks to a joint effort between cybersecurity teams in eight countries, the malware has been successfully taken down.
The malware previously infected users’ data through email attachments and once it gained access to passwords, personal data, and banking information, the malware sold this data to other top-level criminal groups for theft and extortion schemes.
Countries involved included the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands, which took down the malware after working for months across hundreds of international servers.
Malware prevalence has increased during the pandemic, including targeting federal and local governments in some hacking plots. This collective international effort demonstrates the efficacy of cross-country collaboration and is good news for any computer user looking to sleep easier at night.
