Today’s Solutions: December 04, 2025

Back in May, we wrote about Delaware State University’s decision to cancel more than $700,000 of its students’ debt. Now, South Carolina State University (SCSU), another Historically Black College or University (HBCU), is following in its footsteps to wipe out a whopping $9.8 million in student debt.

The move makes South Carolina State University the latest school to use stimulus funds to act on the $1.7 trillion student-debt crisis in the United States. The debt cancellation will clear the account balances of more than 2,500 students who were previously unable to afford to return to college.

As reported by Business Insider, the vast majority of those who have received the debt relief were either not yet registered for the upcoming semester because of past-due account balances, or who have stopped attending college due to inability to pay off their student debt.

“Our university was founded on the tenet of providing students with access to a quality affordable education,” said Acting President Alexander Conyers. “That’s exactly what we intend to do. No student should have to sit home because they can’t afford to pay their past-due debt after having experienced the financial devastation caused by a global pandemic.”
