Today’s Solutions: February 05, 2026

We’ve written a lot about the power of rooftop gardens to boost access to fresh produce in urban areas. Today we’re sharing a story about rooftop gardens, but not the type you might expect. Taxi fleets in Thailand have repurposed the tops of vehicles idled by the pandemic into mini urban garden plots!

Employees from the Ratchapruk and Bovorn Taxi cooperatives assembled their unused vehicles at a local car park and stretched black plastic lining over bamboo frames atop the cars to make small elevated plots. They are now home to small produce plants including tomatoes, cucumbers, and string beans.

The urban gardening initiative aims to bring attention to the financial struggles of taxi drivers during the pandemic. Only 500 of the two cooperatives’ 3,000 car fleets are operating right now, with many drivers having to surrender their vehicles. In an effort to raise awareness about the issue and repurpose idle vehicles into something more useful, the idea for car gardens was born.
