Our eyes function in marvelous ways. A basic description of how the eye works is photons (light particles) fall into the receptors in the retina; the retina then transmits this information to the eye in a type of code, made out of firing electrons. Many people who are blind cannot see because the retina is damaged and cannot properly code the photons into understandable information read by the brain. Now researchers have cracked the code and know how information is sent from our eyes to the brain. A new prosthetic shows remarkable initial test results—blind people will be able to see as well as anyone else.
