Tottenham is an area in the north of London with one of the highest child obesity rates in the country. Almost 40% of 11-year-olds are classified as obese. The area also has a lot of fried chicken restaurants, which is why it is rather odd that a new community project will open another one of those soon. But Chicken Town, as the new restaurant is called, plans to offer better quality chicken meals to young people at the same price as local chicken shops. They will serve herb-fed free-range chicken, steam the meat to minimize exposure to oil, use quality oils, less salt, and they will offer sides such as sweet potato fries, roast corn, greens, coleslaw and coconut rice. The community initiative also hopes to encourage young people to think about their food a bit more, and at the same time plans to become a “cool” place for the young people of Tottenham to hang out at.
