Alzheimer’s is said to be one of the biggest healthcare challenges for the developed world in the coming years. There are currently 47 million people suffering from this disease and other forms of dementia. That number will increase to 75 million by 2030. It is therefore exciting for the medical community to receive news of a breakthrough in the treatment of the disease. Researchers from the University of Southampton, in the UK, successfully blocked the inflammation of the brain in mice, which stopped Alzheimer’s from developing. Mice were administered a drug that stopped the production of cells called microglia, which are associated with memory loss, and which cause said brain inflammation. Researchers were enthusiastic with the results they obtained with the mice and hope their findings can be used in the development of medicine for humans
