San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) launched a 10-month program to test the integration of electrical vehicles (EV) in its power grid in order to improve efficiencies. With 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles forecast on the roads of California by 2025, according to the state’s Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Action Plan, utilities have a vested interest in making sure their infrastructure can avoid an increase in peak demand. The good news is that EV can also act as power storage units, a significant asset when already 30% of total electricity generation in the state is intermittent renewable energy from wind and solar. San Diego’s utility program, and its lessons, are sure to garner a lot of interest from the industry.
