This July 26, on the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act, people living with disabilities in New York City will most likely have something tangible to celebrate: innovative applications created by developers at the urging of AT&T in a partnership with NYU’s Assistive Technology and Ability Lab. The winning project is to be picked by a committee that includes city officials, experts in the field of assistive tech and disability, AT&T New York staff members and four people with disabilities—one with impaired vision, one with cerebral palsy, another who is autistic, and another with multiple sclerosis. The carrier claims to have the humble goal of servicing only members in the local community. We can’t help imagining, however, that the initiative will be emulated elsewhere.
