It is easily tempting to dismiss corporate sustainability goals out of hand as greenwashing. And with good reason, if history is to teach us anything. The fact is that businesses yield tremendous resources and power to impact our world, for better and for worse. When Dow Chemical spells out detailed commitments “to develop breakthrough product innovations, positively impact the lives of 1 billion people, and deliver $1 billion in cost savings or new cash flow for the company by valuing nature in business decisions and advancing a circular economy,” it is worth listening. If only to hold the company accountable to its 2025 Sustainability Goals. Still in doubt? See what Neil Hawkins, Dow’s Corporate Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer has to say. Hint: he puts a major emphasis on ambitious collaborations with NGOs, government, community and value chain partners since even a behemoth like Dow recognizes it couldn’t reach its goals on its own—nor would it make much sense.
