What looks like an over-sized plum wearing a green top hat could actually be a gentler treatment for schizophrenia. Known as the mangosteen, this tropical fruit has long been featured in traditional medicines in South-East Asia, and now Australian researchers believe the rich antioxidants found in the fruit could ease psychosis and other symptoms. Present day medication for schizophrenia can have some unpleasant side effects, but with the mangosteen, those negative effects would be replaced with positive ones like reduced inflammation and improved energy levels. Researchers are now busy examining the effects. Fruit as medication, that sure beats any other treatment.
