Into the mountains

Nowhere is the contrast between the rolling hills and the sharp, craggy cliffs of the Alps as great as in Alpstein, Switzerland. Rock formations reaching heights of 8,000 feet rise up out of nowhere, separated by deep ravines. Built into one such rocky cliff, called the Ebenalp, is the Aescher-Wildkirchli hotel. The 170-year-old gasthaus is accessed only by cable car, followed by a short mountain hike. Don’t expect any luxury, but a night in the hotel does include a mattress to sleep on and the chance to drink and wash up with water fresh from the mountains. The ultimate Alpine experience! | Willemijn Ruissen
