Today’s Solutions: December 17, 2025

In more ways than one, the US is extremely wasteful, with food in particular. Americans throw out 40% of food that is produced in the country, but when you live alone, which 27% of households do, it can be extremely difficult to eat everything you buy. Food waste in a landfill is even worse than car exhaust, food that does to a dump turns into methane– a greenhouse gas 21X more potent than carbon dioxide. Following these steps can cut down on food waste which saves money and the environment.

• Keep a food journal of what you throw away. To fix the problem you first need to know how bad it is.

• Make a big salad each week. Salads are healthy and shouldn’t be wasted much– who can’t eat more salad?

• Collect kitchen sink recipes. Kitchen sink recipes are meant to use all the stuff that might be going bad soon– a great way to cut down on waste.

These are only three suggestions, find the rest on sustainableamerica.org
