Prius is latin for “to go before”, and the name suits Toyota’s car, the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle in the world. It’s now 20 years ago that a concept car version of the Prius hybrid was shown at the Tokyo Motor show in 1995. The car went into production in 1997 and has since inspired many other car makers to develop more sustainable cars. Toyota calculates that as of July 31, it sold about 8 million Prius cars, and these vehicles have resulted in approximately 58 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. In addition, they saved approximately 5.8 billion gallons of gasoline. Environment first, that’s how it should be when it comes to producing cars.
