We don’t need to be told that exercising benefits our health, but did you know it benefits your brain too? If you’re keen to make your brain healthier while you exercise, a new study suggests you should opt for a not-too intense form of running. Until recently, scientists thought that humans were born with a fixed number of brain cells. Now it’s been proven that some areas of the brain, such as the hippocampus, which is needed to store memories, can continue to gain new neurons throughout adulthood. And it was found that running helps to create those extra neurons. For those of us looking to add those extra neurons, just make sure that the running isn’t all too intense as high-intensity stress can cause stress, which inhibits the production of neurons. Now you have one more incentive to get some exercise, so get out there and start running.
