Digital “cryptocurrencies” like Bitcoin are going to transform our societies even more fundamentally than sharing economy initiatives as Uber and Airbnb are already doing because we all use money every day. Digital money still seems far away. However, Australians will soon be able to buy Bitcoin over the counter with cash. Two tech start-ups are launching an over-the-counter platform for selling the digital currency making it available to everyday consumers. The technology is being deployed to about 1,200 newsagents in Australia effectively making them Bitcoin bank outlets and giving many in the struggling industry a new strand to diversify their revenue.
