In rural Zimbabwe where many have no access to electricity, solar schemes are starting to bring clean energy to communities of people at a low cost. The average person earns between $20 and $100 a month, which isn’t enough to purchase a $500 solar system to power their home along with other monthly costs. But with community solar schemes, people pay a small up-front fee to have the systems installed and then pay a set fee each month until the system is paid off. Zimbabwe hopes such schemes will help to bring clean power to the entire population while lessening the country’s dependence on charcoal, firewood and fossil fuels used to power homes.
