Sweden has committed to reaching net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2045. Today, only 5 percent of the electricity Swedes consume comes from burning fossil fuels. Still, the country has big challenges to overcome to meet the ambitious goal. Here’s one innovative solution Sweden is pioneering that can help the whole world. Each ton of cement used in the building industry produces more than half a ton of carbon dioxide. As a result, the cement industry contributes 5-6 percent of all global emissions. Now Sweden has found a way to wield naturally occurring algae to capture carbon dioxide coming from a cement plant before it enters the atmosphere.
