Canada is one of the world’s largest beef producers. The country’s beef industry contributes $26 billion to the national income. Nonetheless, the Canadian government has issued new dietary guidelines that are very much focused on a plant-based diet. The guidelines promote unsaturated fats above saturated fats (meat). There’s no special mention of dairy but Canadians are encouraged to drink more water and fewer processed foods. Last year, the Netherlands’ government adopted guidelines that encourage Dutch citizens to adopt more of a plant-based diet while limiting weekly meat consumption to less than 500 grams (17.6 ounces). Brazil, another big beef producer, recently adopted similar nutritional guidelines.
