Costa Rica may be one of the top nations when it comes to climate action, but that’s not stopping the Central American nation from upping their game. Recently, Costa Rica laid out a long-term plan to achieve zero emissions by 2050 in an attempt to help decarbonize the world economy and curb global warming. Under this new roadmap, Costa Rica would achieve “zero net emissions” by 2050, meaning it would produce no more emissions than it can offset. The new plan also seeks to electrify the country’s public transport as much as possible, phase out fossil fuels, and further expand its forests. While Costa Rica represents only a tiny share of the world’s climate-changing emissions, the plan could serve as a model for other small nations.
