To make dairy products, you need cows. And with cows come direct emissions of methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas. Yes, the dairy industry is a dirty one environmentally speaking, but moves are being made to clean it up. Recently, the largest farming co-operative in Europe, Arla, has pledged to make its operations carbon-neutral from cow to supermarket by 2050. Arla hopes to do this by cutting emissions from production and packaging while relying on new technologies for farms, such as producing clean energy from manure. The Vegan Society, however, is not impressed, saying there is no way to make dairy a climate-friendly product. Be that as it may, we are still a way’s away from removing dairy from our diets, so ambitious initiatives such as this one are welcomed.
