A common argument for the renewable revolution is that clean energy sources like wind and solar put far less of a burden on the environment than burning fossil fuels. But increasing investments in the renewable energy sector has another strong point: it can significantly foster job growth. In the US, for example, renewable energy jobs are currently booming, creating stable and high-wage employment for blue-collar workers in some of the country’s most fossil-fuel heavy states, just as the coal industry is poised for another downturn. The renewable energy industry has become a major US employer as multiple states and utilities are setting 100 percent clean energy goals, creating new demand for workers to build solar panels and wind turbines. On top of that, the coal-to-clean transition is also creating opportunities to replace lost jobs and offers higher wages than the national average, and are widely available to workers without college degrees.
