Type 2 diabetes happens when your body ceases responding to a diet high in excess sugars and refined carbohydrates with the appropriate levels of insulin. Once you begin suffering from type 2 diabetes, it can lead to a number of other health issues including kidney disease, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

This form of diabetes is inexplicably linked to diet, which also means that you can fight diabetes with the right foods. For instance, adding wild salmon to your diet is a powerful way to ward off diabetes. That’s because wild salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids and collagen along with a whole lot of other nutrients that help diabetic prevention.

Making walnuts a part of your diet is another great way to keep type 2 diabetes at bay. One study looked at a group of people with either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes and the effect of regular consumption of walnuts compared to no nut consumption. What the study concluded was that those who ate a regular (self-reported) amount of walnuts showed a lower risk of diabetes and blood glucose levels (especially notable in women).

If you’re on a quest to fight off type 2 diabetes, here are 5 other foods you should consider adding to your diet.

This story was one of the best from 2019, and we are happy to include it in our “12 Days of Optimism” as we get ready to welcome 2020!
