Fall has a special kind of magic. The air turns crisp, the leaves glow gold, and Halloween offers just the right excuse for a little playful escape. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to “do it all,” it may be time to scale back and embrace the season in a gentler, more intentional way.

These eight low-effort, high-comfort ideas make spooky season feel festive without the burnout, and remind us that sometimes, less is more.

1. Create cozy seasonal swaps

As the days get shorter and cooler, subtle lifestyle shifts can help you feel more grounded. “Prepare your nest,” says Kari Leibowitz, author of How to Winter: Harness Your Mindset to Thrive on Cold, Dark, or Difficult Days. Her advice? “Light candles. Switch from a cold breakfast to a warm breakfast. Switch from iced coffee to hot coffee.”

2. Decorate with cleanup in mind

It’s easy to get carried away with cobwebs, faux jack-o’-lanterns, and skeletons galore, but interior designer Elaine Griffin offers a word of wisdom: “What goes up must go down.” Before decking your space, consider how much energy you’ll have to take it all down again. Opt for minimal fall touches if that’s more your style.

3. Reflect on nature’s rhythm

Use your next autumn walk to connect with the deeper meaning of the season. Many cultures see fall as a time of death and rebirth. “It can be a particularly cathartic practice if you are grieving,” says Gary Evans, director of the Forest Bathing Institute. Let the falling leaves be a gentle reminder of the natural cycles of life.

4. Rethink the costume pressure

Halloween doesn’t have to be a contest of cleverness. “Be something unexpected and irreverent,” suggests Los Angeles stylist Sophie Strauss. Think about any random inanimate object, like a piece of fruit or a tissue box! The goal is to have fun without stressing over pop culture references.

5. Upgrade your movie nights

There’s no need to go out for a cinema-quality experience for. Devika Girish, editor of Film Comment Magazine, says it’s all about the setup: watch something spooky (or wholesome) on the biggest screen you have, grab some cozy blankets, and prepare snacks like crisped chickpeas or hot cider. Instant fall magic.

6. Reheat frozen soup like a chef

Chef Sohla El-Waylly has a simple strategy for reviving leftover soup: “Throw the frozen soup into a pot with a splash of water to get a little steam going at the bottom. Go for a low heat at first… then bring it up to a boil.” Don’t forget to re-season. But be careful as it might just need a little salt or lemon to come back to life.

7. Try a tart instead of pie

Baking a pie from scratch can be daunting. Lauren Ko, author of Pieometry, recommends trying a tart instead. “It’s not as time-intensive or technical,” she says. Crushed speculoos cookies or toasted coconut and pecans can become an easy shell with just a bit of butter.

8. Skip the party—guilt-free

Turning down a Halloween invite? No need to feel bad. “It’s important to remember that as humans, we live by making a series of trade-offs,” says Aarti Gupta, clinical director at TherapyNest. Whether you’re resting up for the week ahead or simply need some solo time, give yourself permission to stay in.
