Today’s Solutions: April 24, 2026

Millions of people die every year prematurely because of the air pollution that suffocates many modern cities. Getting rid of the burning of fossil fuels to produce energy is the ultimate perfect solution to this problem. In the mean time there are clever innovations like a paint that breaks down smog. This low-cost coating, made of titanium dioxide, can be painted on roofs and freeways to remove toxic particles from the air before we inhale it. A standard sized roof can be covered with about $5 worth of the paint, and will remove 21 tons of nitrogen oxides—a dangerous component of smog— per day, the same amount a car emits after driving 11,000 miles.
