Your fleece jacket is made up of thousands of synthetic microfibers. When you wash it, those fibers often make their way through drains and wastewater plants into waterways, where fish can eat them. That’s why a company known for making microfiber insulation that fills jackets make by brands like L.L. Bean has come up with a new insulation made of 100 percent recycled polyester. The benefit of this new insulation is that if it ends up in a landfill, unlike other plastic, it will biodegrade relatively quickly. The same is true if the material ends up in the ocean.
