David Attenborough has inspired millions by bringing the sublime natural world into our homes, but his impact is even more surprising than you might expect. A recent survey suggests that his documentaries on climate change are having a major impact on consumers, and may be responsible for a significant drop in the use of single-use plastics. According to the Market researcher GlobalWebIndex, over half of the 3,833 participants say they’ve reduced their use of disposable plastic in the last year and cited David Attenborough’s renowned TV series Blue Planet II and Our Planet as a key influencer in changing their behaviors. The study shows suggests that high-profile TV series can actually change the public’s consumption habits for the better, something that’s being dubbed the ‘Attenborough effect.’
