Today’s Solutions: April 28, 2024

If there’s anything we know after years of reporting solution-based news, it’s that good news doesn’t happen over night. It takes time for solutions to develop, but when these solutions finally go from plan to reality, it feels wonderful to report.

A few years ago we reported that plans were in the making to build the biggest offshore wind farm the world has ever seen in the North Sea, with a unexpected generating capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. Now we’re glad to report that this massive offshore wind farm is officially online. Well, at least the first part of it. Currently, 50 of the 174 turbines are spinning, which already provides enough energy for 287,000 homes.

The turbines are located in a notoriously gusty stretch of open water where some of the world’s other large wind farms operate, which feed power back to the UK as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Scandinavian countries. But of all thee countries plopping wind farms in the North Sea, the UK is harnessing the most power, which is why the country has been successfully weaning itself off of coal for weeks at a time.
