As the UK seeks to spur on the country’s transition towards greener resources of energy, a new government initiative could allow British homeowners with rooftop solar panels to lower their bills by selling their surplus energy to their supplier.

Under the new laws, to be introduced later this week, Britain’s biggest energy companies will have to buy renewable energy from their own customers. Currently, if a homeowner doesn’t use the excess electricity generated by their domestic solar panels, that electricity is lost. The new rules will allow them to make money if they generate electricity for the grid.
