How do we live with intention without falling into the cycle of becoming frazzled from being too busy? To get out of this cycle and harness our potential, licensed therapist Shannon Thomas offers us a five-step approach that will help you live a more intentional life.

First step: Identify areas of growth

Write down three character qualities you want to see in yourself. These may be some you’ve already cultivated but struggle to maintain, and others could be personal growth goals that have been out of reach until now. Once you’ve identified these qualities, move on to the next step.

Second step: Gain new knowledge

Any life growth must begin by taking the time to educate ourselves. We cannot set out to make changes if we have no idea where we’re going. Reading books, blogs, watching TED Talks, knowledgeable YouTube vloggers, and other influencers can help us find the tips and tricks to implement the character growth we want to see in ourselves. And while it may be difficult to find the knowledge out there that speaks to you, don’t let that discourage you. These things take time.

Third step: Find ways to try out your new skills

For instance, if your identified area of growth is to start speaking the truth in love, try to find specific environments where you can practice feeling comfortable sharing your feelings with others. Seek out the people in your life who will receive your words in a healthy manner and encourage you to speak up.

Fourth step: Reflect

Once you’re done sharing your thoughts with a trusted person, it would be important to step back and reflect on the experience. What worked? What didn’t go smoothly? In hindsight, what would you change in the future while trying to speak the truth in love? Being able to gently assess ourselves is an essential component of personal growth and living with intention.

Fifth step: Try again

Remember that all personal growth takes practice. Learning to try again is a key component of moving forward and can help us continuously work towards living a more intentional life.
