The festive Halloween season is upon us, but there is nothing spookier than the masses of plastic thrown away during the holiday from costumes, candy, and decorations. So how can you celebrate plastic-free? This week we have tips and tricks to make your Halloween more eco-friendly, but just as fun!

When it comes to costumes, making a costume at home is less wasteful and cost-efficient. Consider using old clothing items or heading to a thrift shop for supplies. The good thing with homemade costumes is that you’re guaranteed to have the most creative and unique costume on the block.

If you like to dress up your front yard, consider investing in a metal or wooden option you can use year after year. On the inside of your home, natural decoration materials like berries, twigs, burlap, and foliage will add a waste-free fall flair to your home. Painted glass jars and other homemade options also serve as fun projects for kids.

When hosting your fabulous Halloween party, consider using real glasses and silverware. It takes a little longer to clean but cuts down on hefty plastic waste. For food options, wrap treats in recyclable materials like paper, or browse Pinterest for endless wrapping-free finger food options.

Plastic wrapped trick or treat candy is the toughest to avoid, but consider giving out paper wrapped candy in your own home, and skip the plastic pumpkin for a pillowcase or fabric bag.
