Today’s Solutions: April 21, 2026

As gyms have shut their doors and public health authorities suggested we stay indoors, home workouts have become the go-to form of exercise for the quarantine period. Many such bedroom workouts, typically guided by online classes, call for the use of weights such as dumbbells that you may not readily have at home. And while you could order some dumbbells online, which commonly involves buying multiple for different workouts, they tend to be rather pricy.

With this in mind, one innovator with a bit of time on her hands came up with a clever, if not a bit ridiculous alternative for pricey dumbbells. It’s essentially a DIY dumbbell device that turns your spare cans of coconut milk, kidney beans, and Campbell Soup into weights for a workout.

Dubbed the Makeweight, the plastic device is designed to firmly hold a can of food on either side. It’s currently in the prototype stage and is listed on Kickstarter by creator Emily Fukunaga, a management consultant based in Baltimore, who didn’t want to fork out for dumbbells online.

While we don’t really think the world needs a plastic device that holds your spare cans of beans, the device is definitely a testament to the continuous creativity being shown by people in quarantine.
