This week, software giant Microsoft joined eight other global corporations to launch Transform to Net Zero, a coalition that was created to help businesses erase their carbon footprint. The coalition, which includes companies such as Nike, Unilever, and shipping company Maersk, aims to set an example for other businesses to follow.

“The coalition will begin by bringing together industry leaders with some of the world’s most ambitious carbon goals and will work to create playbooks on how to achieve net-zero,” said Lucas Joppa, Microsoft’s chief environmental officer.

To help companies find ways to truly slash their carbon emissions, Microsoft has also launched another initiative called the Microsoft Sustainability Calculator, which allows clients of Microsoft’s cloud-based technology to gain a better understanding of how they can help deliver a zero-carbon economy. The system uses AI and advanced analytics to provide “actionable insights on how to reduce emissions, the ability to forecast emissions, and simplifies carbon reporting.”

While many companies have ambitious climate goals, many of these same companies don’t know what to do in order to achieve these goals. With these two initiatives from Microsoft, the goal is to provide valuable information that allows companies to “close the gap between intention and transformation” and cut emissions that cause climate change.
