Hurricane Laura is the latest climate change-fueled natural disaster to hit the US. The powerful storm made landfall in Louisiana last Thursday with winds of up to 150 miles per hour. Obviously hurricanes are a destructive force, but a hurricane (or any natural disaster) occurring during a pandemic is especially problematic because it can force people to leave their homes and seek assistance in shelters, which can be crowded.

Just like we did for the California wildfires, we’re going to share a number of organizations below that are working to provide aid to the victims of Hurricane Laura.

  1. Imagine Water Works. This organization is a leader of the mutual aid network in Louisiana. The organization prioritizes transparency in their funding allocation and is a great option for supporting marginalized groups as it is a BIPOC and trans-led organization.
  2. Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies. This organization focuses on providing relief for people with disabilities in the wake of a disaster.
  3. Project HOPE. This organization focuses on offering aid along the Texas-Louisiana coastline and offers support to individuals, families, and healthcare infrastructure.
  4. United Cajun Army. This organization offers water, gasoline, generators, and transportation on the ground after natural disasters.
  5. Cajun Navy Rescue & Relief. If you’re in the area, this organization is seeking cleaning materials, rubber boots, bug spray, bleach, wipes, gloves, masks, respirators, and disinfectants. They also accept monetary donations.
  6.  Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana. Donations to this foundation will be distributed to reputable nonprofits in the area to help with long term relief.
  7. All Hands and Hearts. This organization focuses on long-term community rebuilding in the wake of natural disasters.
  8. Americares. This health-focused organization offers medicine, medical supplies, and health programs to those affected by natural disasters.
  9. Operation USA. This group offers international disaster relief and development. They are currently accepting monetary donations and supplies.
  10. American Red Cross. This long-standing relief organization is on the ground in both Louisiana and Texas providing shelter, meals, relief supplies, and more. To donate, you can visit their website, call 800-RED-CROSS, or text LAURA to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Hurricane Laura is expected to have devastating effects in the southern states, but fortunately, there are many organizations on the ground offering immediate relief and aid. If you would like to help those affected and displaced by the storm, these are all reputable options to make a contribution to.
