We’ve written before about the benefits of high-intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, but these workouts aren’t for everyone. If you’re new to a workout routine or prefer lower impact exercises, you may prefer long walks or jogging rather than burpees. The good news is that although jogging may not be the most trendy workout routine, it has numerous benefits for your health!

  1. It’s great for beginners. As mentioned before, jogging is a great intro exercise for those new to working out. It puts less strain on the lungs and muscles than sprinting or running and allows you to ease into a workout routine.
  2. It increases endurance. Although slower than sprinting, jogging still burns calories and boosts endurance. It holds cardiovascular benefits and it’s easy to work your way up to longer and longer sessions.
  3. Improves heart health. Heart health is a primary reason many people take up a workout routine. Jogging effectively strengthens the walls of your heart and improves your ability to intake oxygen.
  4. Boosts your mood. Like other forms of exercise, jogging releases endorphins which improve mood. Even just 30 minutes of jogging can relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as improve self body image. Plus, running outdoors provides the added mental health bonus of time in nature.
  5. Helps you sleep better. Exercise is a critical factor in healthy sleep, and jogging encourages your body to release serotonin, a chemical that is part of the body’s sleep and wake cycle.

Everyone’s exercise routine looks a little different, but the bottom line is that any way you can get up and get moving is a good place to start for improved physical and mental health. Jogging has these five benefits, but if it’s not for you, check out our guide to building a progressive fitness routine that sticks.
