From preventing the spread of COVID-19 to helping turtle conservation and protecting wildlife, dogs continue to prove themselves as humans’ most devoted helpers. One of the latest cases that further adds evidence to this fact involves Sheldon, a dog that’s helping a fire department in Texas detect arson.

A few years ago, the Labrador retriever/golden retriever mix began training as a service dog with Paws With A Cause in Wayland, Michigan. However, not long after he enrolled, Sheldon “flunked out” for always being distracted by his dazzling sense of smell, which prevented him from learning his service dog training tasks. His need to use his nose, though, didn’t go unnoticed.

Shortly after leaving the service dog school, Sheldon was taken in by the State Farm Arson Dog Program, where he quickly excelled at sniffing out the accelerants and fuel used in arson fires.

In 2019, the dog was placed with Lieutenant John Tadlock of the Saginaw Fire Department in Saginaw, Texas, as the department’s first accelerant detection canine. After only a few days of training together, the pair developed a strong friendship.

Now, Sheldon helps the greater Fort Worth area track down arsonists by sniffing out the presence of accelerants and fuels at fire scenes. He and Tadlock recently completed their annual certification under the State Farm Arson Dog Program and are looking forward to many more years of working together. Off-duty, Sheldon lives with Tadlock as a beloved pet, and when he retires from his arson detection duties, the dog will live with Tadlock full time.

Since it started in 1993, the State Farm Arson Dog Program has trained more than 425 dogs. Today, about 100 human-canine arson teams are operating in North America, as reported by People.
