The best-selling vehicle in the United States is getting an electric upgrade: On Wednesday, Ford unveiled an all-electric version of North America’s most popular pickup truck, the F-150, marking a milestone for the country’s efforts to put more EVs on the road.

Ford F-Series has been a favorite among US drivers since the 1970s, with the car company selling almost 900,000 units in 2019. At an attractive price, the electric counterpart aims to achieve the same popularity, while helping the industry move away from gas-guzzling motors.

The novel F-150 Lightning symbolizes an important step forward for the electrification of the US car fleet. Earlier this week, President Joe Biden visited Ford in Detroit to promote his plans to overhaul the nation’s infrastructure and promote electric vehicles.

The electric F-150, which the president took for a test drive, will be the most powerful version of the vehicle in the current lineup, with a travel range of at least 300 miles.

The F-150 is not the only high-profile vehicle joining the electric bandwagon. A few months ago, General Motors announced that it will release an all-electric Hummer in the next two years.
