Being a part of a set of multiples, like twins or triplets usually means that you must share your birthday with your siblings, whether you like it or not. However, a pair of twins born in Salinas, California, will not have to go through life sharing their birthday—or even their birth year.

Fatima Madrigal closed out the year by giving birth to Alfredo Antonio Trujillo on December 31st, 2021, at 11:45 pm. Then Alfredo’s sister, Aylin Yolanda Trujillo, arrived to ring in the new year at precisely 12:00 am on the first of January 2022, making her the first baby born in Monterey County this year.

“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” exclaimed Fatima, the proud new mother. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”

The chances of twins being born on different days are already quite low, but twin deliveries that are born in completely different years are even more remarkable—a one in two million chance, according to the Natividad Medical Center, where the twins were born.

Both babies were delivered safely, with Aylin weighing in a 5lb 14oz, and her brother Antonio at 6lb 1oz. They are joining two older sisters and an older brother at home.

“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022,” said Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at Natividad medical group. “What an amazing way to start the New Year!”
