Our planet can grow more plant life than previous calculations have predicted—but with a little help from humans. Researchers re-analyzed data that calculated the theoretical biomass limit, but this time took into account human intervention. As it turns out few plants in the natural world maximize their growth rates, meaning that not many plants grow as large as they possibly can. However, we can help plants grow to their full potential through genetic modification, plant breeding and land management techniques—processes that have been proven to boost plant productivity.
