There are 700 million people that need glasses but can’t afford them, many living in the developing world. Cost can be a large barrier to overcome when trying to get a pair of glasses. A new company called ViFlex is working to create basic glasses that affordable to those on tight incomes in the developing world. ViFlex is saving costs by breaking glasses down into their most basic components: Lens, lens holder, and a wire frame to hold it all together. Current prototypes cost about $1.30. ViFlex is still working on the design—early adopters complained they weren’t modern enough—a small price to pay when you’re given the gift of sight.
