Bristol Bay, Alaska is the most northeastern part of the Bering Sea, home to the largest salmon population in the world, and accounts for 40 percent of the seafood caught in the US—worth about $2 billion annually. Bristol Bay is also rich in oil and gas deposits, sitting deep below the beautiful scenery, and was once threatened by plans for drilling. Recently president Obabma gave Bristol Bay protected status, saving it from future drilling and oil projects. “It’s something that is too precious for us to be putting out to the highest bidder,” Obama said.
