What if the world would manage to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty, to ensure healthy lives for all and to reduce inequality within and between states? Yes, the world would be a better place. After months of negotiations, the 193 member states of the United Nations now agreed on an agenda for the world’s sustainable development over the next 15 years. The agenda covers 17 sustainable development goals, together forming 169 targets, and they will replace the millennium development goals, which expire at the end of the year. As UN secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said: “This is the people’s agenda, a plan of action for ending poverty in all its dimensions, irreversibly, everywhere, and leaving no one behind.”
