In response to customer requests, one of Mexico’s largest coffee shop chains has begun accepting bitcoin at a university coffee shop. The Café Punta del Cielo coffee shop at the Universidad de las Americas Puebla (UDLAP) has begun accepting bitcoin payments through Bitso, a Mexican bitcoin exchange. Café Punta del Cielo is a gourmet coffee producer and distributor operates more than 100 coffee shops throughout Mexico. The agreement marks another stage of growth for BitsoPagos (BitsoPay) since the Bitso-based merchant service business launched this past February. “With BitsoPagos, Punta del Cielo can offer another payment solution for its customers – one that is secure, cost-effective, and easy to use,” said Pablo Gonzalez, CEO of Bitso. “We are very excited that the Punta del Cielo in UDLAP is the first in the franchise to begin taking bitcoin payments. Students are now able to experience first-hand next-gen payments technology on their daily routine.” “It was a pleasant surprise to hear from Punta del Cielo’s supervisor many students had been asking about bitcoin and bitcoin payments,” said Jose Rodriguez, vice president of payments at Bitso. “We had placed a ‘bitcoin accepted here’ stamp days before the integration. We expected this successful BitsosPagos integration to create the traction for more Punta del Cielo and many other merchants to adopt bitcoin.” The Punta del Cielo team was pleased with the integration. “People have been very curious, and we want to invite everyone to use bitcoin,” one team member noted. Bitso expects to extend BitsoPagos to other Punta del Cielo franchises and eventually cover the entire country. Punta del Cielo focuses on production, sale and distribution of gourmet coffee from the state of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero. In addition to Mexico, the company is active in the U.S., Hong Kong, Spain and France. Bitso is Mexico’s first bitcoin exchange. For information, visit www.udlap.mx.
