The Ocean Conservancy has teamed up with Dow Chemical and Coca-Cola to implement a large-scale, long-term plan to eliminate ocean trash by preventing it from getting into the oceans in the first place. The plan focuses on doing this in China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, five countries responsible for over half of the plastic waste that ends up in the oceans. The first step is to keep trash that’s already been collected from escaping by stopping dumping and securing or relocating dumps near waterways. The plan also seeks to increase proper trash collection to 80% in all five countries. The hope is not only to reduce global plastic leakage by 50%, but to use these plastics as a part of the circular economy and convert them into products or energy.
