A study out of the Canadian University of Guelph displays encouraging signs that ‘green’ buildings are good for business and the environment. The study shows that sustainable and energy efficient buildings have higher rents and occupancy rates as well as more satisfied tenants than conventional buildings. The researchers covered 10 years of data from 148 buildings in Canada and 143 in the United States. Green buildings were those that met sustainability standards based on three different certification programs: LEED, BOMA BESt, and ENERGY STAR. Together, they are having a more positive effect on the environment with on average 14% less energy being consumed per square feet.
