The fatty acids from fish are great for your health but it’s a widely held belief that overconsumption of fish is bad because of the high mercury levels, and should be avoided especially by expecting mothers. Now new research has found otherwise, and discovered that the benefits of the fatty acids actually counteract the negatives of fish mercury. The study followed the diets of 1500 expecting mothers from Seychelles, an island off the east African coast, and discovered that despite their high levels of fish consumption—about 12 fish meals a week—all their children developed normally. Fish is a healthier alternative to red meat, but due to overfishing should still be consumed sparingly, and only from sustainable sources.
